The park does not only present a perfect flower splendour²²²² that changes with the seasons but also offers visitors attractive sports and game facilities in addition to a Japanese garden, tropical plant house, and alpinum. A round trip with the Grugabahn along a route of 3.3 km provides an eventful overview over the entire park area. Sight Seeing in Essen: Lake Baldeney
Lake Baldeney, created in 1931 as a water reservoir and to purify² the Ruhr water, is a recreational area of extra-regional significance today. Rowing²² clubs, sailing and surfing schools around the 2.7 km2 lake invite everyone to spend their leisure time in an active fashion. Once a year, the German sailing elite meets here for the Essen Week, the largest German regatta on a lake. To cover the 14.7 km long route around the lake on inline skates, on foot, or by bicycle, is one of the greatest pleasures for the sport-minded lake visitors. Those who prefer a more comfortable mode of transport look upon the wooded lake and Ruhr embankments from the boats of the "Weiße Flotte". An attractive sight in the Ruhr heights: Villa Hügel, still the residence of the industrialist Krupp family as late as the 1940s and today the venue for first class art historic exhibitions.

Sight Seeing in Essen: The Aalto Theater

Bright granite embedded into the green meadows² of the Essen city garden - the Aalto-Theater, built according²² to plans by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, equally fascinates eye and intellect with its modern and harmonious lines. It was no accident that the Essen opera house was celebrated as "the most beautiful German theatre since 1945" following its opening in September 1988. The aesthetic concept continues on the inside of the building. Aalto here realized his concept of a "humane architecture" beyond stiff theatre splendour³. The elegant foyer, therefore, is a well visited performance location for piano matinées and song evenings. The reputation of the Essen Philharmonc and the excellent ensemble even reaches as far as the neighbouring foreign countries. Stage scenery, lighting, and costumes play their part in the enjoyment of first class opera performances and ballet evenings.
